GNU Free Documentation License Should Java Moss be quarantine first before putting it in the tank with the Betta? Q. I'm planning on purchasing Java Moss for my Betta tank. I'm just curious if it needs to be quarantine first because as we all know, pet stores tank are somewhat filthy. I don't want to bring home disease or anything to my betta fish. I ALWAYS dip ALL my plants in a bleach solution (1:19 bleach:water) before adding them to my tank to kill any and all pathogens (including Ich/Ick), snails, or other hitch hikers. I have not had a problem yet, and highly recommend it for anybody with their fishes' health in mind. A 2-3 minute dip is sufficient and will save you a lot of trouble. Just be sure to avoid scented bleach. Also, you will likely see initial die off from the Moss after it goes into the tank-- this is totally normal, it's just adjusting to the new conditions (light, temperature, pH, hardness, etc.) and will begin to grow again after a couple of weeks.
