From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In grammar, the comparative is the form of an adjective or adverb which denotes the degree or grade by which a person, thing, or other entity has a property or quality greater or less in extent than that of another, and is used in this context with a subordinating conjunction, such as than, as...as, etc. StructureThe structure of a comparative in English consists normally of the positive form of the adjective or adverb, plus the suffix -er, or (in the case of polysyllabic words borrowed from foreign languages) the modifier "more" (or "less"/ "fewer") before the adjective or adverb. The form is usually completed by "than" and the noun which is being compared, e.g. "he is taller than his father is", or "the village is less picturesque than the town nearby". "Than" is used as a subordinating conjunction to introduce the second element of a comparative sentence while the first element expresses the difference ("our new house is larger than the old one"). There is less water in Saudi Arabia than there is in the United States; but however, there are fewer people in Canada than there are in California. Two-clause sentencesFor sentences with the two clauses other two-part comparative subordinating conjunctions may be used:

Mrs. Howell can pick 2 pineapples per hour, but it takes her two hours to pick a coconut. Who has a comparative advantage in picking pineapples? In picking coconuts? Which of the two should specialize in which tasks? Assume that Mr. And Mrs. Howell had originally been separated from each other, and that they originally each spent 12 hours per day working, spending 6 hours picking pineapples and 6 hours picking coconuts. How will their total production change if they find each other and begin to specializing. Asked by B. - Tue Apr 7 21:55:12 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can compute each person's efficiency at both tasks thru ratios: In one hour's work: Mr Howell: 1 pineapple / 1 coconut = 1.0 pineapple per coconut Mrs Howell: 2 pineapples / 0.5 coconut = 4.0 pineapples per coconut Mrs Howell's comparative advantage is in picking pineapples, Mrs Howell's comparative advantage is in picking coconuts Mrs Howell should focus on coconuts and Mrs Howell on pineapples Originally, Mr. Howell would have produced 6 pineapples and 6 coconuts, and Mrs. Howell would have produced 12 pineapples and 3 coconuts. So their total production would be 18 pineapples and 9 coconuts. By specializing, In 12 hours, Mrs. Howell will produce 24 pineapples and Mr Howell will produce 12 coconuts. So their total… [cont.] Answered by WarrenBB - Wed Apr 8 15:09:17 2009 What could i talk about my comparative essay between Hamlet and The Catcher in the Rye? Q. for one of the paragraphs i want to talk about how both Holden and Hamlet's family members died and how, but i was wondering if i should do that since its a comparative essay? what do you guys think Asked by Roberto M - Thu Jul 24 18:13:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes. You're allowed to explain and discuss any sort of plot events - in either book - as long as they help support the connection you're trying to make. Though, I would suggest you go a little deeper than just saying that both Hamlet and Holden lost family members, and go into how that loss influenced each of their actions and how they deal/dealt with situations. Answered by stellar_fury - Thu Jul 24 18:23:22 2008 how is comparative literature as a major?
Q. Hello everyone, I'm a junior in college and thinking of switching to this. I speak German, I've studied Dutch and Russian, and I wouldn't mind a future job using languages. I find the comparative aspect of this field interesting, but I am wondering if this is a lightweight major, or if it is viewed that way by employers. I'm currently a linguistics student. Asked by Person - Sat Jan 3 21:00:05 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, as a more liberal arts major, it doesn't lead directly to a specific job, but rather develops skills that can be used in a wide array of jobs, skills that can be employed by a wide array of corporations and governmental posts.
