What motivates lawyers to do pro bono work and should it become mandatory?
Q. What do you think motivates lawyers to do pro bono work? Should pro bono work be mandatory for law students and/or lawyers?

A. Many lawyers have a keen sense of social justice. This leads them to want to give back to the most vulnerable members of society who cannot defend themselves without help. Some of the greatest professional satisfaction comes from helping someone who would have been taken advantage of without assistance. Many large firms now use a commitment to pro bono work as a recruiting point for getting the most talented young attorneys coming out of law school. There is already a goal for every California attorney to do 40 hours of pro bono work per year. Many attorneys take that goal very seriously and meet or surpass it. I personally do not believe that making pro bono mandatory would be helpful because an attorney who does not believe in what… [cont.]

What is the reputation of pro bono attorneys?
Q. I'm looking into getting a pro bono attorney for my custody battle. My father said that 9 times out of 10 pro bono attorney's lose. Is this true?
Asked by BetterBetsy - Sun Oct 18 14:13:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dear betterbe, Your father is a narrow minded idiot. Attorneys providing pro bono services are often among the highest paid and super competent lawyers. They have huge ego's and take the pro bono responsibility as highly serious and intensely as their cases for well heeled clients. That clarified, you are highly unlikely to find pro bono attorneys to directly represent you in your child custody/support matter.

How do you go about obtaining Pro Bono work from a law school?
Q. How do you go about getting a lawyer / law school interested in a Pro Bono case?
Asked by gary j - Sat Feb 24 17:39:20 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Call them and ask. Very simple. Your case may be taken depending on the facts. Most law schools have pro bono projects. You might also call the bar association where you live to see if they have a list of pro bono lawyers. Most lawyers take on some pro bono business.

How can I find a pro bono attorney for my child?
Q. My daughter is being bullied by a girl in school. Despite suspension, she has not stopped harrassing my daughter. She wants to file a restraining order against her. I have picked up the paperwork and know we can file and go through the process alone, but this girl's parents have money and will probably hire an attorney. I am a single mom that is out of a job. I want to know if anyone has any info about how to get an attorney to represent my daughter on a pro bono basis.
Asked by wolftheef - Thu May 15 07:10:25 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You'll have a hard time with this. Retraining orders are not high on lawyers things to do pro bono because as you stated you don't really need a lawyer to get one and so most lawyers will see it as a waste of their time. You might be able to get a lawyer to help you who has some time to kill and is already at the courthouse. The good thing though is that restraining orders are almost always granted. The only issue I can see here is because the children go to the same school. With situations like where the restraining order might require that the other girl change schools the bar is going to be set a lot higher than normal for a restraining order. If the bullying is really that bad you might have better luck getting the school board to… [cont.]

How do I find a pro-bono lawyer (not legal aid) to help with a custody battle?
Q. I am going through a tough custody battle where domestic violence is involved, and I cannot find help anywhere. Is there a place besides legal aid that you can find a lawyer that will do pro-bono work? I can explain further if needed for finding a lawyer purpose. (I am in Michigan) I forgot to add that I have already contacted legal aid and they said that they do not have any resources at this time.
Asked by Mr. R - Wed Nov 4 14:34:03 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Normally legal aid is the agency that will handle pro-bono type cases. It differs from state to state though. Other than a legal aid office, probably the best source for possible pro-bono would your state's bar association. Most state's bar association has a pro-bono division (or have the phone to give you) where private lawyers have volunteered to do some pro-bono work. You will have to qualify and such but if you do qualify, they will normally assign your case to a private attorney (rather than legal aid) who will do the work without charge to you. You would still be responsible for the costs though. Please note though that a "tough custody battle" is not something most attorneys want to get involved in when they are not being… [cont.]

A. You can contact the county bar association there. But it is not at all likely that you will find one, unless it's quite a special and especially worthy case.

How do I go about finding a Pro Bono Lawyer in Broward County, Florida?
Q. I'm nearly un-employed and every time I search online, I get overwhelmed with information about pro-bono things that I cannot make sense of. I need to speak with a pro-bono lawyer but don't know how to find one.
Asked by satyr_cub - Thu Sep 13 15:20:13 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no such thing as a "pro bono" lawyer any more than there are "pro bono" cab drivers, accountants, or grocery clerks. There are lawyers who for good reasons of their own may assist people or institutions without charge. You haven't stated any reason why you think you are entitled to a free lawyer.

How to find attorneys that work pro-bono?
Q. I need to find a good criminal defense attorney that would be willing to take a bogus case pro-bono. My husband is being charged with assault for allegedly giving his 15 year old daughter a "wedgie" (this would have happened over a year ago when she was 13 or 14) This child is a pathological liar and this is not the first time she has tried to say stuff, not only about her father, but other men as well. How can I find an attorney willing to work this case either pro-bono or cheaper than usual?
Asked by anxiously curious - Sat Feb 6 20:08:06 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Contact the public defender. I can't imagine any lawyer, even the worst scumbag lawyers out there taking a stand against a child abuse allegation. Actually, on second thought all lawyers are equally scum, so you may have some luck if you look around.

A. Call the Nevada State Bar's lawyer referral service at (702) 382-0504. They may be able to refer you to one that will take it on a pro bono or reduced fee basis. You can also try the UNLV law school's law clinic. They often take cases on a pro bono basis to get their students court time.

Is there any pro bono lawyers who deal with dental cases in the inland empire?
Q. I recently acquired poor dental work, they drilled a hole in my tooth and did not fill it, do you know any pro bono lawyers who deal with this type of thing?
Asked by TG - Wed Jan 27 19:16:29 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I doubt it. Practicing attorneys take a certain number of cases for free (pro bono). You are looking to recover monetary damages. I doubt that a lawyer is going to take your case pro bono to enrich you. What you need is a personal injury attorney who will take your case on a contingency basis. There are tons of them in the Yellow Pages.

A. Your best chances of finding a "pro bono" attorney will involve contacting your local chapter of the American Bar Association. The ABA is an organization that every practicing attorney belongs to. They will give you a list of attorneys who are known to accept pro bono work. You should be able to find them in your local phone book. Good luck with your problem.

Does anyone know of any family law attorneys in Pennsylvania that will take a custody case pro bono?
Q. I can't afford the legal fees required to retain an attorney and unfortunately legal aid apparently won't get involved in a custody dispute, they will only offer minimal services to parents with pre-arranged custody agreement. I'm expecting a child in less than a month and the mother and I are in disagreement about the child's future. So if anyone knows of any service that helps fathers with custody issues or anyone that might take a custody case pro bono or anything at all that could be helpful it would be greatly appreciated.

Could I get a lawyer to take this case Pro Bono?
Q. I was in a "behavior modification" program out in Montana. The school is involved in a class action suite being sued for over 150 million dollars, for abuse, neglect, child endagerment, fraud, and a host of other charges. I joined a class action suite but I am not happy with the law firm, I don't think theyre making any progress. I want to get dropped off the class action suite and bring a suite on my own. I was wondering if this sounds like a suite a lawyer may take pro bono?
